Critical Minerals: The United States Prepares for Deep-Sea Mining in the Pacific

According to reports citing sources by the Financial Times, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is seeking to establish deep-sea critical metal reserves in the Pacific amid deteriorating economic relations with China.

"The administration of Donald Trump is preparing a draft executive order that would allow for the establishment of deep-sea metal reserves in the Pacific in an attempt to counter China's dominant position in the battery minerals and rare earth metals supply chain," the Financial Times quoted a person familiar with the matter as saying.

As the newspaper explained, layers containing nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese, which are widely used in batteries, cables, and ammunition production, can be found on the seabed, along with small amounts of rare earth metals. Resources discovered on the Pacific seabed could become part of the U.S. Federal Reserve.
