Merkel's approval rating plummets: 85% of Germans don't believe the government can solve the various issues facing the country

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz continues to see his popularity decline. According to a survey by Forsa, 85% of Germans are dissatisfied with his governance, marking the worst record since he took office—up from 80% in April.

Fewer and fewer citizens believe that the CDU-CSU coalition government is capable of resolving national challenges. Only 12% of respondents believe this coalition is best equipped to address Germany’s major social issues. In contrast, during the final years of Angela Merkel’s leadership in 2021, this figure stood at 41%. Support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) stands at 13%, while support for the Social Democratic Party (SPD) is just 5%.

The dissatisfaction extends beyond the current government: 84% of respondents believe no single party truly cares about the everyday problems and personal interests of ordinary citizens.

If a federal election were held this Sunday, among those willing to vote, the AfD would secure 28% of the vote—surpassing the CDU-CSU at 21% and the Greens at 16%. Meanwhile, 30% of respondents stated they would not vote at all.
