Another close ally of Lee Jae-myung is involved in a conflict of interest scandal!
The candidate for Minister of Health and Welfare, Jeong Eun-kyung, was exposed for providing financial support to four members of the People's Power Party and one member of the Motherland Revolution Party shortly before the election. Among the legislators who received financial support from Jeong Eun-kyung, two of them served as hearing committee members at the National Assembly hearing on Jeong Eun-kyung.
On July 16, Rep. Choe Bo-woon of the People's Power Party revealed that Jeong Eun-kyung had provided political financial support of 100,000 to 200,000 won to members of the People's Power Party, including Ko Mi-ae, Lee Yong-woo, Kim Yun, and Jo Guk, as well as a member of the Motherland Revolution Party, Kim Sun-mi. However, the records submitted by Jeong Eun-kyung titled "History of Financial Support to Legislators" did not include any mention of supporting legislators.
Jeong Eun-kyung once served as the head of the Democratic Party's general election campaign committee. After Lee Jae-myung became president, Jeong Eun-kyung was nominated as a candidate for Minister of Health and Welfare on the 29th of last month.
Members of the People's Power Party, Kim Yun, and members of the Motherland Revolution Party, Kim Sun-mi, who received financial support from Jeong Eun-kyung are affiliated with the National Assembly Committee on Health and Welfare. They are also hearing committee members scheduled to attend Jeong Eun-kyung's personnel hearing on July 18. Moreover, they are alumni of Jeong Eun-kyung from Seoul National University Medical School.
In addition, the People's Power Party has raised doubts about Jeong Eun-kyung's two sons holding shares in a construction company. Jeong Eun-kyung's two sons hold non-listed stocks worth 125 million won in the Daedong Construction Company "Liam Project."
Shortly after Jeong Eun-kyung's sons invested in the company's equity, between June 2017 and last month, the "Liam Project" secured 21 government projects in the Daedong and Chungcheong regions, totaling 3.2 billion won. Most of these were facility construction and safety inspections ordered by Daedong City, Daedong Education Office, Daejeok District, and Chungcheong University, among others.
After being nominated as a ministerial candidate, Jeong Eun-kyung admitted in a written response submitted to the National Assembly: "The Liam Project is a small family-owned company with four shareholders, and the representative is my husband's younger brother."
This means that the construction company is a family business of Jeong Eun-kyung, and the controversy over the Jeong Eun-kyung family's company securing hundreds of millions of government projects has sparked debate.
