U.S.-Ukraine Talks "Productive," Rubio Says Agreement Still Requires Significant Work
American Chinese News report After Ukraine agreed to advance the core content of the U.S.-proposed peace plan for Russia and Ukraine, senior officials from the United States and Ukraine held a four-hour meeting in Miami, Florida on Sunday.
The U.S. delegation included Secretary of State Rubio, Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Ivanka Trump's husband Jared Kushner.
The Ukrainian delegation was led by Chairman of the National Security and Defense Council Umerov.
Notably, the chief negotiator for Ukraine had been Andriy Yermak, the chief of staff to President Zelenskyy. Yermak announced his resignation after a surprise raid by Ukraine's anti-corruption agency on Friday.
According to reports, Yermak was involved in a $100 million energy corruption case. Although he has not been charged with any crime, the related investigation has put significant domestic political pressure on Zelenskyy's government.
Rubio immediately told the Ukrainian side at the start of the meeting on Sunday that the goal of this meeting was to find a way for Ukraine to maintain its sovereignty and independence. He also mentioned that Trump's special envoy Witkoff would continue negotiations on the peace process in Moscow after talks with Ukrainian representatives.
On the other hand, Umerov thanked the United States for its support for Ukraine.
After a four-hour closed-door meeting, Rubio said that the talks were productive, but there is still a lot of work to be done before a final agreement can be reached.
Umerov also stated that the talks were fruitful, but he did not reveal whether any substantial progress had been made in the negotiations.
So far, neither the United States nor Ukraine has released the latest revised content of the peace plan. Previously, a 28-point peace plan approved by President Trump had been strongly opposed by Ukraine and its European allies. After the high-level talks between U.S. and Ukrainian officials in Geneva, Trump revealed that the content of the plan had been reduced from 28 points to 22 points.
Before the meeting on Sunday, Ukrainian President Zelenskyy said on X that the U.S. had shown a constructive attitude, and it is possible that both sides could further refine and finalize the steps needed to end the war in the coming days.
Meanwhile, as U.S. and Ukrainian senior officials held talks, Russian attacks on Kyiv continued. Zelenskyy said on Sunday that Russian forces had used nearly 1,400 drones and thousands of guided weapons to attack Ukraine this week. He called on Kyiv's allies to further strengthen Ukraine's air defense capabilities and push for a reliable peace plan.
