China's ambassador to the U.S. has now clearly stated China's position on Sino-U.S. relations! There are two points worth noting! On May 13, as U.S. President Trump was preparing to visit China, Chinese Ambassador Xie Feng made the following two remarks. First, Ambassador Xie stated that China does not shy away from the fact that there is indeed competition between China and the United States in areas such as economy and trade, but both sides should engage in healthy competition aimed at contributing more significantly to poverty reduction and development for developing countries, and promoting sustained inclusive growth of the global economy.

Secondly, China urges the U.S. side to abide by the one-China principle and the three joint communiqués between China and the U.S. through concrete actions, and to make the right decision as soon as possible. Clearly, our ambassador’s statement explicitly acknowledges the existence of competition between China and the U.S., yet our stance is that this competition should be constructive—aimed at advancing global development—not zero-sum, mutually restrictive, or obstructive rivalry.

Regarding the Taiwan issue, the ambassador spoke even more directly: the time has come for the United States to make a choice on the Taiwan question. Why does our ambassador urge the U.S. to make the correct decision promptly? Because China now possesses sufficient strength and capability to achieve national reunification, and it is time for the U.S. to abandon its strategy of using Taiwan to contain China. Ambassador Xie’s two statements are firm yet measured—one soft, one hard—our bottom lines are clear, and we also demonstrate broad vision and magnanimity. Ultimately, it will be up to the United States to decide what course of action to take.
