Korean Media: Surge of 13 Times, China’s Another Rise

On November 3, South Korean media outlet *Electronic Times* published an article stating that analysis indicates new drug candidate molecules developed in China this year will account for more than two-thirds of global technology transaction value. This marks an increase of over 13 times compared to the 5% share recorded in 2021.

Global pharmaceutical market research firm EvaluatePharma forecasts that by 2026, Chinese assets will represent more than 66.7% of total global pharmaceutical and biotechnology transactions. Following a rise from 5% in 2021 to 42% in 2025, China's share has now surpassed two-thirds for the first time this year.

This year, the value of global technology transactions has grown faster than the number of deals. The upfront payments for 123 global technology transfer agreements signed in the first quarter totaled approximately $5 billion. Analysis shows that while the overall number of transactions remains moderate, large-scale deals centered on Chinese drug candidates have increased significantly.

China is expanding its business scope beyond its historical focus on low-cost generics and contract manufacturing into areas such as GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, bispecific antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and novel drug development platforms. According to EvaluatePharma, China’s biotech strength—previously rooted in rapid development timelines and cost efficiency—has now evolved into top-tier competitiveness within each of its respective therapeutic categories.
