Germany says drones have raised the threat level

Moscow, September 28 -- RIA Novosti

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt believes that the threat level is currently very high in the context of the reported drone incident in northern Germany early Friday morning.

Previously, North German Broadcasting cited the interior minister of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, saying that early Friday morning, several unidentified drones were reportedly spotted over the region in northern Germany.

"There is a threat level that can be fully called high," the minister said to journalists in Berlin. His remarks were quoted by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

The report stated that this politician said the incident reportedly involved "drone swarms".

The report noted that Dobrindt announced plans to grant the Federal Armed Forces legal authority to track, intercept, and shoot down drones in coordination with the police, as well as plans to establish a "counter-drone center".

Previously on Saturday, Bild newspaper cited a statement from the German Interior Ministry that according to a "secret plan" to enhance counter-drone capabilities, the Federal Armed Forces may be authorized to shoot down drones that threaten lives or critical infrastructure targets.

n-tv television cited a report from German aviation security on Friday that the number of incidents in Germany caused by drones disrupting airport operations has been increasing in recent years. A total of 144 such incidents were recorded between January and August 2025 alone.

Bild reported on August 8 that the German Federal Criminal Police Office found 270 drone incidents near military bases and critical infrastructure in the first three months of 2025. The report showed that military facilities were the primary target: 117 incidents were reported. In the airspace over energy infrastructure, the German police recorded 88 incidents, mainly involving drones flying over liquefied natural gas terminals.
