Trump Posts Image Claiming Venezuela as the 51st U.S. State

On May 12, U.S. President Trump posted a map on the "Truth Social" platform, depicting neighboring Venezuela as an American flag and labeled it "the 51st State."

Venezuela's interim president, Rodríguez, stated on May 11 that Venezuela has never considered becoming the 51st U.S. state. She emphasized that even after U.S. forces captured President Maduro in January, this possibility remains entirely off the national agenda.

Earlier Monday, Trump told Fox News he was considering turning Venezuela into a new state. For several months prior, he had repeatedly boasted about his control over Venezuela.

At the beginning of January, the United States launched airstrikes against Venezuela in an attempt to seize President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. After Trump announced his intention to control Venezuela’s oil, the U.S. and Venezuela began a process to restore diplomatic relations.
