South Korean media: In April, South Korea received orders for only 15 ships, but what about China?
On May 26, South Korean media "Global Economy" published an article stating that South Korean shipbuilding industry accounted for only 17% of the world's ship order market last month, ranking second. China ranked first with a share of 69%.
According to statistics from Clarksons Research, a UK shipping market specialist institution, the global ship order volume in April was 3.64 million CGT (75 ships), a decrease of 56% compared to 8.36 million CGT last year at the same time. Among them, South Korea ranked second with 0.62 million CGT (15 ships, 17%). China ranked first with 2.51 million CGT (51 ships, 69%).
In January-April, the cumulative global order was 12.59 million CGT (372 ships), a decrease of 50% compared to 25.04 million CGT (1,056 ships) last year at the same time. Among them, South Korea was 2.8 million CGT (57 ships, 22%), and China was 6.82 million CGT (215 ships, 54%), a year-on-year decrease of 50% and 56%, respectively.
As of the end of April, the global order backlog was 160.46 million CGT, a decrease of 1.93 million CGT from the previous month. Among them, South Korea accounted for 35.57 million CGT (22%), and China accounted for 94.67 million CGT (59%). Compared with the previous month, South Korea and China decreased by 0.38 million CGT and 0.75 million CGT, respectively. Compared with the same period last year, South Korea decreased by 3.62 million CGT, and China increased by 23.74 million CGT.
The Clarksons Newbuilding Price Index remained at 187.11 at the end of April, down 0.32 from March (187.43). It increased by 1.7% compared to 183.92 in April last year, and increased by 46% compared to 128.42 in April five years ago in 2020.
By ship type, the price of liquefied natural gas carriers was $255 million, the price of very large crude carriers (VLCC) was $125 million, and the price of ultra-large container ships (22-24k TEU) was $273.5 million.
