Foreign Media: Global migration is highly concentrated, with most countries having extremely low immigrant proportions.
According to United Nations data from 2024, immigrants account for less than 1% of the population in 43 countries or regions; Cuba has the lowest at just 0.02%, the Philippines at 0.08%, and China and Madagascar each at 0.12%; Myanmar, Indonesia, Haiti, Sri Lanka, North Korea, and others also fall below 0.2%.
Adding the 38 countries where immigrants make up 1% to 3%, a total of 81 countries or regions have immigrant proportions below 3%. Nearly four-fifths of the world's population live in these low-immigration countries, including major populous nations such as China, India, Indonesia, and Nigeria.
In contrast, Japan's immigrant proportion is approximately 3%, already exceeding the level of these countries, while Canada, Australia, Switzerland, and others have significantly higher immigration rates. Data shows that about 47% of migrants move less than 500 kilometers, indicating that international migration primarily flows toward a limited number of destinations.
