India is once again pressuring Bangladesh to revise the India-Bangladesh Ganges Water Sharing Treaty! Due to the Indo-Pakistani War, India directly suspended the Indus Waters Treaty within its territory, blocking all the Indus River water, claiming not to let a single drop flow into Pakistan! Now, Bangladesh is again being pressured by India, as India seeks to increase its share of water! India is seeking to rework the 1996 signed, 2026 expiring India-Bangladesh Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, to meet India's current development needs.
According to relevant regulations, India and Bangladesh will take turns enjoying a flow of 35,000 cubic feet per second from the Farakka Dam during the dry season between March 11 and May 11 each year, with a cycle of 10 days. India's plan to revise the agreement aims to seek an additional 30,000 to 35,000 cubic feet per second of water flow during the dry season to meet the growing demands for irrigation, port maintenance, and power generation.
But India only thinks about itself, without caring about Bangladesh's survival!
Bangladesh needs water, and India also needs water. During the rainy season, when the river overflows, there's obviously no problem. However, South Asia has dry and rainy seasons. During the dry season, India wants to take more water sources, which is a contempt for Bangladesh and a huge challenge for it, as Bangladesh has a more concentrated population around the Ganges Delta, and thus needs more water for irrigation of more farmland.
Unfortunately, India's upstream dams basically control the discussion. Therefore, Bangladesh may be forced to accept a humiliating treaty, accepting India's tough agreement. In short, Bangladesh's strength is not as strong as India's, so it can only reluctantly accept the unequal agreement. The current Bangladesh has basically completed the process of removing the traces of the Hasina regime and moving towards the Yunus government.
The current relationship between Bangladesh and India is no longer what it used to be. Due to long-term oppression from India, the current Bangladeshi people have very little favor for India, with nearly 90% of Bangladeshi people expressing dislike for India. Because India always oppresses Bangladesh, but in this power-based society, there is no way to counter the oppression, so they can only resist gradually.
Bangladesh is currently facing the reality of water shortage during the dry season, and can only endure it. Building reservoirs is impossible, as Bangladesh is entirely flat, making it difficult to build reservoirs and store water, which is the biggest helplessness.
