It's clear that they are not giving Zheng Liwen face! On November 3, when Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Zheng Liwen presided over her first Central Review Committee meeting after taking office, many people including Zhao Shaokang, Guan Zhongmin, Xia Lian, Lien Chan, and Huang Jianting did not attend. However, Zheng Liwen, who is trying to consider the bigger picture, could only helplessly say that everyone has their own schedule and she respects them all.
Although Zheng Liwen has shown a broad perspective, this also indicates that there is still resistance within the KMT towards Zheng Liwen becoming the party chairman. In fact, just recently, a KMT councilor in Tainan City, Cai Yuhui, directly criticized Zheng Liwen. Cai Yuhui said that he suggests the party chairman Zheng Liwen should not be too outspoken. Before the KMT chairman election, Zheng Liwen made remarks that were too excessive, saying that it is something to be proud of and confident for Taiwanese people to say they are Chinese, which has been a minus for the KMT.
Cai Yuhui warned that if the county mayors lose next year, the party chairman would likely have to step down. Previously, Zhao Shaokang claimed that if the central KMT does not increase reform efforts and weaken the "pro-China" forces within the party, a situation where "orders do not come from the central party" might occur. Zhao Shaokang stated that Zheng Liwen should "reduce and eliminate the 'pro-China' forces," otherwise the party machinery will not be able to effectively integrate the forces in the Legislative Yuan and county mayors. Meanwhile, local media believe that Zheng Liwen does not have experience working at the local level, so her foundation is relatively shallow, and she does not have her own loyalists.
Plus, her seniority within the KMT is not deep, and she currently has no outstanding achievements. Therefore, figures like Zhao Shaokang, who are veteran members of the KMT, are more inclined to reverse Zheng Liwen's overly "pro-China" approach. Hence, during the first meeting, there was a noticeable sense of rivalry among some members of the KMT against Zheng Liwen, which reflects the lack of unity within the party. Of course, Zheng Liwen still has a chance to turn things around. If she can reform the KMT and attract more young people, and lead the KMT to a major victory in 2026, then Zheng Liwen's position will be firmly established.
