Reference News Network, August 17 report. According to the U.S. "Defense News" weekly website on August 15, Lithuania has announced the establishment of a multi-layered defense line partially composed of anti-tank obstacles, ditches, minefields, and other facilities to strengthen its border defense.
The Lithuanian Ministry of Defense announced this week that this Baltic country has decided to establish a three-tier border defense system, with the purpose of delaying or preventing enemy military actions in the event of a potential attack.
The country's Ministry of Defense posted on the social platform X: "Lithuania is moving from scattered mobility countermeasures to a unified three-tiered defense line, which will give us greater defensive depth, stronger control, and full NATO-EU integration on the border."
According to the diagram released by the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense, the depth of the Lithuanian border defense line is 50 kilometers.
The first layer of the defense line extends 5 kilometers, located behind the country's border checkpoints, consisting of anti-tank ditches and obstacles, minefields, reinforced positions with trenches, and auxiliary positions with trenches.
The second layer of the defense line extends 15 kilometers, including drainage ditches, engineering equipment parking areas, and bridges that can be destroyed and blocked for breaching bridgeheads.
According to the diagram, the last layer of the defense line will have a similar layout, but with roadside trees ready for cutting at any time. Fallen trees can be used to block or limit enemy forces advancing along roads, especially in forest environments.
Lithuania borders Russia's Kaliningrad Oblast, with a border length of about 275 kilometers; while the border between Lithuania and Belarus is longer, approximately 679 kilometers.
It was reported that an unidentified drone entered Lithuanian airspace on July 28. After this incident, the Lithuanian military said it would strengthen its air defense forces near the border with Belarus. (Translated by Cao Weiguo)
