Japanese Woman Arrested for Paid Examination Cheating for Chinese Students
On February 26, the Toshima Police Station in Tokyo arrested suspect Moriyama Rui (37 years old), a company employee from Shinjuku Ward, who was charged with forging private documents and stamps, and providing paid examination cheating services for a 20-year-old Chinese vocational school student to take the English proficiency test "TOEIC".
In May 2025, Moriyama disguised as a male, impersonated a Chinese male student, and wrote the name of the Chinese student on the answer sheet during the TOEIC exam held in Toshima Ward. In this exam, Moriyama scored 955 points, passed the test, and the Chinese student paid her 1 million yen (about 45,000 yuan RMB).
During police questioning, Moriyama remained silent, while the Chinese male student admitted the charges, saying: "I asked her to take the exam for me."
According to the Toshima Police Station, this arrest came about during the investigation of another case of examination cheating. The school found that a Chinese female graduate student's enrollment certificate had significant differences from the photo on the exam certificate. The school confirmed with the police and discovered that the Chinese female student had obtained English test scores through someone else's cheating and gained admission to the graduate program. During the investigation, it was found that the arrested Moriyama had also entered the same university's examination room to cheat for others.
The police seized multiple photos, forged cards, wigs, and other items from Moriyama's home.
