Conflict breaks out again at the Thailand-Cambodia border! Both sides accuse each other of opening fire first, with 1 dead and 3 injured on the Cambodian side

On the 12th, Thai and Cambodian armies had a brief exchange of fire in the disputed border area between the two countries, with both sides accusing the other of firing first. The conflict resulted in one soldier killed and three injured on the Cambodian side, while there were no casualties on the Thai side.

According to Reuters, the Cambodian Ministry of Defense stated that the incident occurred at 3:50 PM local time, with Thai soldiers stationed near the border village opening fire first, causing casualties among Cambodian personnel.

Thai military spokesperson Winthai Suvaree said in rebuttal that it was Cambodian soldiers who fired the first shot towards the Thai side. "The Thai forces immediately sought cover and fired warning shots according to combat regulations... the exchange of fire lasted about 10 minutes before calming down." Winthai added that there were no casualties on the Thai side.

Recently, tensions have once again risen along the Thailand-Cambodia border. The Thai side accused the Cambodian army of recently planting new landmines in the border area, resulting in injuries to Thai soldiers. Subsequently, the Thai government announced the next day to suspend the ceasefire agreement signed last month between the two countries.

Thailand's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura told the media today that Thailand demands Cambodia formally apologize for the landmine incident.

Cambodia denied the accusation of planting new landmines and urged Thailand to abide by the ceasefire agreement and avoid further escalation of the situation. (Rural Cat)
