China's Infrastructure: New Port to Be Built in Tanzania in December

Tanzania's government spokesperson, Jason Msigwa, said that the country will launch a large port construction project in Bagamoyo city in December and upgrade the existing Kigoma lake port.

According to the Tanzanian Daily News, Msigwa said, "We plan to build railway lines and develop large port facilities, including the Bagamoyo port, which will start construction this December."

Bagamoyo is located about 75 kilometers north of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest port city. In 2013, the Tanzanian government signed a framework agreement with China Merchants Holdings International and the Oman National Reserve Fund to build the Bagamoyo port. After years of contract term negotiations, an agreement was finally reached in 2021.

Once completed, the Bagamoyo port will become the largest port in East Africa, surpassing Kenya's Mombasa port.

The port will be developed into the core of an economic zone, with plans to host 700 processing and manufacturing companies. The port is planned to have 28 berths, capable of accommodating ships with a draft depth of up to 20 meters. It is reported that the total investment in the project will reach 10 billion US dollars.
