Modi vows "Made in India": I will defend Indian interests like a wall, and never compromise

On August 15 local time, Indian Prime Minister Modi delivered a speech on the walls of the Red Fort in New Delhi, vowing to continue promoting the "Make in India" plan and further achieve self-reliance. Modi said he would become "a wall" to protect the interests of Indian farmers.

Reuters reported that during the two-hour speech, Modi did not mention tariffs or the United States at all, but this statement is seen as a response to Trump's tariff policy. At this time, the Modi government is facing difficulties due to a 50% high tariff, and trade negotiations between the two sides have also broken down because of differences over importing American agricultural products and dairy products, as well as India continuing to purchase Russian oil.

"Farmers, fishermen, and herders are our top priority," Modi said in his speech. "I, Modi, will be like a wall, resisting any policies that threaten their interests. India will never compromise on protecting the interests of farmers."

It is noted that farmers are an important political group in India. Previously, they had fierce protests against Modi's agricultural reforms, pushing him to repeal three agricultural laws in 2021, which was a rare defeat for him.

Notably, after Trump announced a 50% tariff, the ruling Indian National Congress (BJP) party posted pictures on social media supporting Modi. The picture showed Modi being hit by stones, bricks, and a dagger depicted as a tariff from behind, while also protecting a farmer carrying a plow.

Modi said, "A determined effort is needed to build a strong India now... I hope our businessmen and shopkeepers demonstrate 'Swadeshi' (local) products." Reuters mentioned that for years, Modi has been promoting the "Make in India" plan, but current global trade tensions and supply chain disruptions have made it more urgent for India to achieve this goal.

He called on Indian companies to produce various products from fertilizers to jet engines and electric vehicle batteries. He also mentioned that Indian-made semiconductor chips will enter the market by the end of this year, and India is pushing for self-sufficiency in critical minerals, currently conducting exploration in over 1200 locations.

Modi promised to reduce the goods and services tax before the Diwali festival in October (one of India's biggest shopping seasons).
