Local Civic Groups in Shizuoka Demand Withdrawal of Self-Defense Forces' Long-Range Missiles
According to a report by The Asahi Shimbun on April 1, on March 31, civic groups opposing the deployment of long-range missiles capable of attacking enemy bases held a rally in front of the Ground Self-Defense Force's Fujisawa Base in Oyama Town, Shizuoka Prefecture, and submitted a petition demanding the cancellation of the deployment to military authorities.
The missile system deployed at the Fujisawa Base is referred to as a "high-speed glide missile for island defense," with an irregular flight trajectory. Its purpose is to enhance defensive capabilities in response to evolving security conditions.
However, this move has triggered intense anxiety among local residents, who fear that it represents a "departure from the exclusive defense policy," thereby increasing the risk of their area being targeted.
On the same day, members of the local civic group "Fujisawa Rejects Missiles" gathered in front of the Self-Defense Force base, where co-spokesperson Yamazaki handed over the petition to the Ground Self-Defense Force commander.
The petition states: "The deployment of long-range missiles violates the principle of 'exclusive defense' and undermines peaceful coexistence," and calls for "the Fujisawa area not to become a launchpad for preemptive strikes."
Yoshifumi Nozuki, the group’s 68-year-old secretary-general, pointed out that both the national and prefectural governments had pledged in 1967 not to convert the East Fujisawa Training Area and its surrounding regions into a missile base, adding: "The nation must honor its promises." Group members present at the scene held up banners shouting "Fujisawa Rejects Missiles!" and "Keep Your Promises!"
On the same day, Mayor Masahide Komoyama of Oyama Town expressed a certain degree of understanding regarding this deployment. He stated: "I understand that under severe security conditions, such missile deployments are unavoidable; however, as a local leader, I must also consider the safety of residents. The national government should clearly explain this decision to the local community."
