The website of the China National Space Administration reported on April 24 that the CNSA released the results of the international application for the Chang'e-5 mission lunar samples.

On April 24, 2025, at the opening ceremony of the tenth "China Space Day," the China National Space Administration publicly announced the results of the international application for the Chang'e-5 mission lunar samples. The applications from six countries and seven institutions were approved, and five institutions from five countries signed the "Lunar Sample Borrowing Agreement for the Chang'e-5 Mission" with the CNSA at the event.

In accordance with the "Methods for Managing Lunar Samples" and the "Detailed Rules for the International Cooperation Management of Lunar Samples and Scientific Data," the CNSA organized an international review of lunar research sample borrowing applications. Ultimately, the borrowing applications from seven institutions, including the Paris Institute of Global Physics in France, Cologne University in Germany, Osaka University in Japan, the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission, the Open University in the UK, Brown University in the US, and Stony Brook University of the State University of New York in the US, were approved. These institutions are eligible to obtain lunar samples brought back by the Chang'e-5 mission for scientific research purposes.

Zhongde Shan, head of the China National Space Administration, stated that "Chang'e" belongs not only to China but also to the world, to all humanity. The Chinese lunar exploration project has always adhered to the principles of equality, mutual benefit, peaceful use, and win-win cooperation, sharing development achievements with the international community. China will continue to open up international applications for lunar research samples. We look forward to global scientists making more scientific discoveries and jointly expanding human cognition for the benefit of all humanity.

It is reported that in November 2023, the CNSA opened the application for the borrowing of lunar research samples from the Chang'e-5 mission to the international community. By the end of December 2023, a total of 24 borrowing applications were received from 11 countries and international organizations, totaling 71 sample requests.
