Romania says NATO will increase the number of troops deployed in the country

Romanian Foreign Minister Ana Ioana Cristofor said that this move will compensate for the reduction of US military personnel.

Bucharest, October 31 -- TASS

Romanian Foreign Minister Ana Ioana Cristofor told the Romanian "Radio Free Europe" website that the reduction of US military personnel in Romania will be offset by an increase in the number of troops from other NATO countries.

She said, "We are working with the United States and within the NATO framework to further strengthen our defense and deterrence capabilities. Our main focus is also on air defense. By the end of this year and next year, we will see a strengthened NATO presence in Romania, especially in terms of the ability to intervene when Romania faces direct risks."

The minister continued, "From the perspective of relations with the United States, the main direction of current work is to be able to jointly identify joint investment projects in the defense industry. Because this is also part of the bilateral negotiations we are currently conducting. Romania and other allies have decided to increase their defense budgets to 5% - which also means an open market for defense industry products."

One day earlier, the United States had informed the Romanian Ministry of Defense that it would reduce its military personnel in the country by about 700 people.
