Air defense historian Knutov: Drones will soon no longer play an important role in combat
In an interview with TASS, air defense historian Yuri Knutov commented on the appearance of laser weapons in Israel capable of targeting aircraft-type drones. The expert noted that there are doubts about whether such weapons can effectively shoot down small FPV (first-person view) drones.
He pointed out that most modern laser combat systems are manually controlled via joysticks, making it extremely difficult to keep the beam continuously aimed at a maneuvering target for a long time.
Currently, the technology for automatically capturing targets and continuously tracking them until they are destroyed by ammunition is only mastered by the United States, which is attempting to use it to intercept ballistic missiles.
Knutov believes that electromagnetic cannons will be more promising weapons against drones.
"This is a powerful device that can emit strong electromagnetic signals and burn electronic equipment. All microcircuits will be destroyed into scrap metal, completely disabling a group of drones within hundreds of meters. Such devices already exist in relevant countries, and the U.S. has also conducted tests in its military," the expert said.
He believes that the current data is still in the accumulation and research stage, and practical results are expected in 3 to 5 years.
"Once this problem is solved, drones will no longer dominate the battlefield," the military analyst confidently stated.
