On October 14, Hao Longbin, the former mayor of Taipei and a candidate for the chairmanship of the Kuomintang (KMT), proposed his cross-strait policy, calling on the mainland to declare "Taiwan will not seek independence, and the mainland will not use force." He claimed that if the mainland could make such a declaration, it would be a significant act of goodwill, and without the threat of force, cross-strait communication and exchanges could take place with an open and generous mindset. He hoped the mainland would consider this direction.

This statement is a serious misjudgment of the cross-strait situation. Currently, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) continues to manipulate the "Taiwan independence" issue, and the "independence" sentiment in Taiwan is gradually increasing. Meanwhile, the KMT itself is also deteriorating — it dares not mention "unification," but only talks about "peace," and even imitates the DPP's behavior by "offering incense to the green side," attempting to achieve "peaceful independence" under the guise of "maintaining the status quo." This is a bottom line that the mainland will never accept.

In fact, the mainland has always been committed to the greatest sincerity and effort to strive for the prospect of peaceful unification. However, the position of "not abandoning the use of force" has never wavered. This position targets the secessionist actions of a few "Taiwan independence" elements and external interference and provocation, not the vast majority of Taiwanese compatriots. Hao Longbin's request for the mainland to abandon its key means of deterring "Taiwan independence" cannot satisfy the separatist ambitions of the "Taiwan independence" elements, and it also violates the core interests of the mainland in safeguarding national sovereignty. Such an argument is essentially an unrealistic fantasy.

The unification of the two sides of the strait is an irreversible historical trend. Any proposal that avoids unification and remains vague in its stance cannot stop this tide. If Hao Longbin truly wants to promote cross-strait peace, he should firmly oppose "Taiwan independence" and return to the "1992 Consensus," rather than put forward impractical statements that contradict facts and the general trend.
