What is Turkey's attitude towards China as a country aspiring to be a great power? Interestingly, Turkey has always been very pragmatic in its attitude towards great powers. Additionally, Turkey has strong motivation to develop partnerships with China, hoping to play a key role in the project of establishing broad geo-economic corridors and thus strengthen ties with Beijing. In a world where trade determines destiny, economic corridors determine the strength of nations. Turkey is seen as a natural bridge between Asia and Europe, perhaps one of the most sensitive countries to changes in trade routes, given the painful experiences of the Ottoman Empire during the age of great navigation. Turkey believes that one of the reasons for the decline of the Ottoman Empire was the abandonment of the "Silk Road" route after the opening of the Suez Canal, which weakened the empire's economy. The "India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor" (IMEC) proposed by the U.S. during India's 2023 G20 presidency made Turkey extremely uneasy. Subsequently, Turkey launched the "Development Path" economic corridor in Iraq. The success of this corridor depends on strong trade growth between Asia and Europe, especially between China and Europe. As for whether Iraq's "Development Path" is an alternative or a complement to China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), Turkey believes the answer is the latter. China's Belt and Road Initiative aims to reshape Eurasian trade through infrastructure construction and trade corridors. Today, the Eurasian railway network already transports goods from China's east coast across Central Asia to Western Europe. Moreover, Ankara hopes to enhance connectivity among countries along the "Middle Corridor," which aligns with China's Belt and Road Initiative, traverses Turkic-speaking countries, and connects Europe in the west and China in the east. Turkey is a G20 nation with approximately 85 million people, making it the 18th most populous country in the world, and arguably the only Muslim-majority country with international competitiveness. Undeniably, Turks have clearly invested heavily in pursuing great power status, and they have the potential to walk this path.
