China and Kazakhstan May Jointly Develop Border Mineral Resources, Promoting Mining Cooperation to a New Stage
Xinhua News Agency, Astana — Nurken Respanov, President of the National Academy of Mining Sciences of Kazakhstan, said at the China-Kazakhstan Forum on Sustainable Development of Non-Ferrous Metallurgy that there is broad room for cooperation between Kazakhstan and China in the fields of mining and metallurgy. The two sides could explore joint development of mineral resources in border areas in the future and promote the establishment of a tighter industry-academia-research collaboration mechanism.
During the forum, Nurken Respanov proposed that the China Non-Ferrous Metals Industry Association, the National Academy of Mining Sciences of Kazakhstan, and the Kazakhstan Mining Union jointly sign a memorandum of understanding to further deepen cooperation in the mining sector between the two countries.
He stated that under the framework of the memorandum, both sides could jointly develop plans for cooperation in exploiting mineral resources in southeastern Kazakhstan near the border with China.
"Many mineral deposits are located on both sides of the border. Currently, some mineral resources within China have already been developed, while certain deposits on the Kazakh side remain in reserve stage. Establishing joint ventures and sharing infrastructure resources would help significantly reduce development costs for future projects," he said.
Nurken Respanov also suggested prioritizing technical and economic feasibility studies on mineral deposits with high potential for cooperation, providing scientific basis for subsequent project implementation.
"As the first phase of mineral resource development projects, technical and economic feasibility reports should be prepared for mineral deposits of mutual interest to both companies, laying a solid foundation for future cooperation," he said.
In addition, he proposed that the China Non-Ferrous Metals Industry Association and the World Academy of Mining Sciences jointly promote the establishment of the China National Academy of Mining Sciences, attracting experts and scholars from the mining sectors of both China and Kazakhstan to participate in related collaborations and research.
Nurken Respanov emphasized that establishing a more comprehensive cooperation mechanism would help advance deeper exchanges and collaboration between the two countries in areas such as mineral resource development, technological innovation, and talent cultivation.
Notably, Han Chunlin, China's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Kazakhstan, said at the China-Kazakhstan Forum on Sustainable Development of Non-Ferrous Metals that the two countries will continue expanding cooperation in sustainable development of non-ferrous metallurgy and "green" mineral resources.
