The Great Temptation for Israel: The State Duma Explains the Israeli Defense Forces' Attack on Damascus
After the killing of Druze people in southern Syria, Israel attacked more than 160 targets inside Syria. One of the attacks took place in the center of Damascus. The State Duma explained the motives behind Israel's actions.
On July 16, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) attacked the headquarters building of the Syrian armed forces in the Damascus area twice. The IDF stated that it had launched about 160 attacks. Dmitry Novikov, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs of the State Duma, commented on the situation.
On July 13 (Sunday), armed groups attacked several Druze settlements in Suweida province. On July 15, the Israeli government ordered an attack on the Syrian army in response to its actions against the Druze community in Suweida.
"Syria is largely in a state of institutional collapse. This poses some temptation for the Israeli military, prompting it to attempt some ambitious and aggressive plans against Syria,"
explained Dmitry Novikov in his comments to "Ridus."
It should be noted that Israel has actually controlled the Golan Heights, which originally belonged to Syria and has been a focal point of contention between Damascus and Tel Aviv. Now, some experts believe that it cannot be ruled out that Israel may attempt to remove the current Syrian leader.
