The United States imposes new sanctions citing assistance to Iran in acquiring weapons, including Chinese individuals and enterprises
According to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, on May 8 local time, as part of its so-called "economic wrath" operation, the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) under the U.S. Department of the Treasury added 10 individuals and companies to its sanctions list, alleging they assisted Iran's military in obtaining weapons and raw materials for Iran's "Shahed" series of drones and ballistic missile projects, including Chinese citizens and firms.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury stated that it stands ready to take economic actions against Iran's defense industrial base at any time to prevent Iran from rebuilding its production capacity and projecting power overseas. It also plans to act against any foreign companies supporting Iran's illicit commercial activities—including airlines—and may impose secondary sanctions on foreign financial institutions facilitating Iran’s activities when necessary, including those linked to China’s "Teapot" refinery.
The so-called "Teapot" refinery is a collective term used in international markets for smaller private Chinese refineries.
China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson previously stated that China consistently opposes unilateral sanctions lacking legal basis under international law, urging the United States to cease its wrongful practices of excessive sanctions and extraterritorial jurisdiction. China will firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its domestic enterprises.
