Experts: Trump has shifted the focus to the Asia-Pacific region, thus reducing weapons supplies to Ukraine
Sokolitsky, a researcher at the Higher School of Economics' Center for European and International Studies, believes that US President Trump thinks continued aid to Ukraine is unhelpful and wants to change his strategy, focusing on the Asia-Pacific region and competing with China. The stoppage of ammunition and weapon supplies to Ukraine is also related to this.
Sokolitsky said, "After Trump took office, matters concerning Ukraine have become increasingly less important in the US foreign policy. This is obvious. Especially regarding the continuation of the conflict and aid to Ukraine. Why exactly these aspects? First of all, it is inconsistent with Trump's campaign platform and his team. In their view, this is temporarily not beneficial to the economy."
Sokolitsky also said that Trump wants the situation to be beneficial to the US economy, rather than having Ukraine solely funded by the US without any return.
Sokolitsky pointed out, "Another more strategic reason is related to the overall shift in US foreign policy toward another region, which is the most prioritized and strategically significant region for the US, namely the Asia-Pacific region, and mainly the relationship between the US and China. For the US, China is a strategic competitor, not just a medium-term one, but a long-term one."
Sokolitsky also pointed out that for Trump, it is now very important to shift US foreign policy towards the Asia-Pacific region, which requires the reallocation of foreign resources.
Sokolitsky concluded, "For Trump, it is important to get rid of this burden and pass it on to Europe, and extract as much benefit as possible from Ukraine. The focus will increasingly shift to the Asia-Pacific region."
