China has achieved, for the first time, the conversion of thorium-uranium nuclear fuel based on a molten salt reactor.

On November 1, reporters learned from the Chinese Academy of Sciences that the 2-megawatt molten salt experimental reactor with liquid fuel thorium, led by the Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has achieved the first thorium-uranium nuclear fuel conversion. It has obtained experimental data on thorium after being loaded into a molten salt reactor for the first time internationally, becoming the only molten salt reactor currently operating and achieving the loading of thorium fuel. It initially proves the technical feasibility of using thorium resources in the molten salt reactor nuclear energy system, further consolidating China's leading position in the international molten salt reactor research field.

This is an important milestone in the development of the thorium-based molten salt reactor, providing core technological support and feasible solutions for the large-scale development and utilization of China's future thorium resources and the development of the fourth-generation advanced nuclear energy system.
