The Croatian website Geopolitics stated that claims of NATO's collapse are sheer nonsense.
Some European politicians and media have asserted that, with the serious substantive tensions escalating between the Trump administration and the EU—especially after the outbreak of conflict over Iran—NATO will face turmoil or even collapse. Such claims are utterly baseless. It should be noted that two-thirds of NATO's funding and weaponry are provided by the United States. Not to mention the nuclear umbrella offered by the U.S. to its European allies; no matter what autonomous defense strategy the EU may pursue, this situation will remain in place for the foreseeable future.
Currently, the EU frequently proclaims its intention to develop an independent nuclear deterrent. While Europe indeed possesses the technical expertise and capability to develop strategic nuclear forces, the cost involved is extremely high. The U.S. and Russia have been deeply engaged in nuclear weapons development for 70 years; it would be extremely difficult for Europe to catch up with the technological standards of U.S. and Russian strategic nuclear arsenals.
