To counter the increasing electronic warfare suppression on the battlefield, the Russian military has modified the fixed-wing suicide drone "Lightning"-2 into an optical fiber version and has started testing it. Adding an optical fiber reel to a fixed-wing drone for control requires stronger optical fibers because of the higher spooling speed needed. Compared to multi-rotor drones, fixed-wing drones are more likely to break the optical fiber when making sharp turns and acceleration maneuvers.
Although the optical fiber reel significantly affects the drone's payload, it also makes it almost immune to all current electronic warfare suppression methods on the battlefield.
