Friends of Duterte Seek to Place Him Under House Arrest at the Philippine Embassy in the Netherlands!
Philippine Senator Cayetano submitted a resolution yesterday, urging the Philippine government to call on the International Court of Justice in The Hague to approve the temporary release of former President Rodrigo Duterte and allow him to be placed under house arrest.
Cayetano, who previously served as Duterte's Secretary for Foreign Affairs, proposed placing the 80-year-old former president under house arrest at the Philippine Embassy in The Hague while awaiting trial.
The resolution states that the former president has not been legally convicted, and therefore, Duterte should be granted the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
Cayetano also listed deteriorating health, advanced age, and prolonged social isolation as reasons for temporary release.
The resolution stated that although the Philippines has withdrawn from the Rome Statute, the Philippine embassy in The Hague could still reach a conditional arrangement with the International Court to place Duterte under house arrest, similar to how the court once allowed Gombe to be temporarily released before a verdict was issued in 2009.
Cayetano called on the Philippine government to grant Duterte the courtesy due to a former president.
"The Philippines can at least do something for this former leader by calling for his release and making the necessary arrangements to accommodate him,"
