Russian Energy Ministry: Russia Remained the Largest Supplier of Enriched Uranium to U.S. Nuclear Power Plants Last Year

The U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Information Administration (EIA) released a report on the 30th stating that Russia remained the largest supplier of enriched uranium to U.S. nuclear power plants in 2024.

The report stated: "In 2024, a total of 15 million separative work units (SWU) were purchased from eight suppliers under enrichment service contracts. Among the overseas sources of separative work, 20% came from Russia, 18% from France, 15% from the Netherlands, 9% from the United Kingdom, and 7% from Germany."

According to the data table reflecting the labor cost of isotope separation during the uranium enrichment process, Russia remained the largest source of fuel for U.S. nuclear power plants last year. Since 2020 — the earliest statistical time recorded — Russia has maintained this position.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright previously admitted that due to insufficient domestic capacity, the United States had to continue purchasing enriched uranium from Russia. He stated that the United States plans to expand its domestic enriched uranium production capacity and will announce new enriched uranium projects within the next few weeks.
