Germany's new government is scheduled to be sworn in this week, with Boris Pistorius continuing as the Minister of Defense.

According to a Reuters report, the governing coalition formed by Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) will be sworn in on Tuesday, May 6th. Friedrich Merz, the leader of the CDU, will become the new Chancellor of Germany. The SPD confirmed on Monday, May 5th, that Defense Minister Boris Pistorius will remain in his position in the new government.

Pistorius has served as the Minister of Defense since January 2023 and has been well-received for his straightforward style and firm stance on national security issues.

The SPD achieved its worst historical performance in the general election on February 23rd, but Pistorius is the only SPD minister to retain his position in the new coalition government.

After the three-party ruling coalition led by then-Chancellor Scholz collapsed in November last year, many SPD members supported Pistorius as the prime ministerial candidate, but Scholz clearly stated that he would not withdraw from the race, and Pistorius later withdrew from the campaign.

Last week, the SPD announced that Lars Klingbeil, co-leader of the party, will serve as the Minister of Finance in the new coalition government, and nominated former Bundestag President Baerbel Bas as the Minister of Labor on Monday.

Among the seven ministers nominated by the SPD, five are women, reflecting the party's goal of achieving overall gender equality in the cabinet.

Klingbeil said, "Due to the poor results of the federal election, we jointly announce an update in personnel and policy direction. As the party leadership, we are taking the next step together with the government team."
