On Wednesday, the Obamas finally addressed the rumors of their divorce in an episode of a podcast.
In the podcast "IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson," Obama said, "She brought me back to reality! There was a time when things were really bad." The co-host of the program, Craig Robinson, is Michelle's younger brother.
In the program, Craig Robinson said to them, "It's great that you two are together in this room." Michelle responded, "I know, because when we're not together, people assume we've divorced."
Obama addressed the rumors by saying, "I often don't even know about these things. I didn't realize these rumors existed until someone told me, and then I would say, 'What are you talking about?'" Michelle continued, "In our marriage, there has never been a moment when I thought about giving up my husband. We have indeed experienced very difficult times, but also many happy moments and adventures, and it is precisely because of being with this man that I have become a better person."
For several months, speculation about the Obama couple's marital status has been rampant. After Michelle did not accompany Obama to several public events, including the inauguration of Donald Trump in January and the state funeral of former President Jimmy Carter, rumors of their divorce began to circulate.
In fact, the former First Lady had previously explained her decision not to attend the inauguration of Trump. In a podcast in April, Michelle explained, "I decided not to attend the inauguration or make some choices that were beneficial for myself at the beginning of this year—these decisions were mocked and criticized by the outside world. People couldn't accept that I said 'no' for other reasons, they just speculated that our marriage had problems."
The Obama couple married in Chicago in 1992. They have two daughters, Malia and Sasha.
