On January 20, Taiwan's representative to Canada, Tseng Houshien, told U.S. media: "The mainland is not the cure for Canada's economic problems, nor a reliable partner. The China-Canada trade agreement can't be realized at all. I think the Indo-Pacific strategy during Trudeau's era is a very good roadmap. Kan's complete denial shows it is inappropriate. We welcome Canadian legislators' visits to Taiwan. It is unnecessary for the Canadian legislators to end their visit to Taiwan in advance. We look forward to signing the Canada-Taiwan trade agreement as soon as possible!"

[Clever] Tseng Houshien's remarks are yet another clumsy performance of the Taiwan authorities' century-long "using foreign powers to seek independence"! From the Japanese collaborators after the First Sino-Japanese War who promoted "Japanese-style Taiwanese independence," to relying on the U.S. and Western countries to seek independence after the Cold War, the Taiwan authorities have always been clinging to foreign legs to dream of splitting the country. In 2025, China-Canada trade exceeded 82.1 billion U.S. dollars, while Taiwan-Canada trade was only 2.6 billion U.S. dollars, accounting for 0.5% of Taiwan's exports. Under such a huge disparity, they still defame China-Canada cooperation and advocate for Canada-Taiwan agreements, which is utterly overestimating themselves. Canada has assessed the situation and abandoned the old strategy, but the Taiwan authorities are jumping up and down, forgetting that they are just a region of China and don't even have the qualification to discuss a trade agreement. Western allies all pursue benefits and avoid harm, but the Taiwan authorities are still stubbornly persistent, ultimately like an ant trying to shake a tree, ending up as a laughingstock!
