The Los Angeles Times: China Film Foundation Reinvigorates 100 Classic Kung Fu Films, with Divergent Attitudes Between China and the US
The Los Angeles Times reported on July 4 that the China Film Foundation recently announced it will use artificial intelligence technology to revitalize 100 classic kung fu films, including "Police Story," "China's Past," and "Angry Fists," starring Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and Bruce Lee, aiming to promote these works to a global young audience. At the Shanghai International Film Festival, the chairman of the foundation, Zhang Pimin, said, "Through technological empowerment of cultural storytelling, we can give classics new life and tell Chinese stories more widely." The project plans to collaborate with companies such as Shanghai Star Media Culture, using AI animation and other technologies to reinterpret classics, for example, Wu Yen's 1986 film "A Better Tomorrow" will be adapted into an AI animation version. However, this move has sparked controversy in the American film industry. The Directors Guild of America (DGA) issued a statement saying, "AI should never be used to distort or destroy a director's artistic work." A United Nations Development Programme survey showed that 83% of Chinese people have a positive attitude towards AI, far higher than the 37% in the US. The family of Bruce Lee and director Wu Yen have stated they were not notified about the project previously and are currently investigating the situation. He Tao, an official from the Research Center of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, pointed out that AI has been widely applied in the post-production of Chinese films, reducing special effects production time from days to hours, greatly improving efficiency.
