After the outbreak of a new round of chip war, the US has also imposed a cutoff on engine technology. Ambassador Xie Feng of China to the United States made a powerful response: where there is blockade, there will be breakthrough.
I just saw a report from the Global Times on May 30 saying that the US has suspended the sale of some key technologies to China, including jet engine-related technologies. The report also said that the US move targets Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), which is competing with dominant aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing in developing domestically produced commercial aircraft.
According to information from the US Department of Commerce, the suspension of these technology exports applies to the development of the C919 aircraft. Besides the now-suspended technologies, the US is also expanding its review scope to examine more strategically significant technology exports.
Ambassador Xie Feng of China to the United States has responded to this: where there is blockade, there will be breakthrough; where there are waves, we will break through them.
China's scientific and technological innovation has continued to "break through" despite the "eighty-one tribulations," thanks to a globally competitive innovation ecosystem, record-high R&D investments, an ever-growing talent pool, and generations of Chinese people working hard.
The sudden cutoff of engines by the US side was somewhat unexpected, as the engines for the C919 are provided by a joint venture between GE Aerospace of the US and Safran of France. The US indeed has the capability to cut off the engines for the C919.
However, the export licenses for the C919 engines have not yet expired, meaning that if the US completely cuts off supplies, it would be a breach of contract, facing both penalties and damage to its international reputation, as well as that of France.
From this perspective, I believe this is an extreme pressure tactic used by the Trump administration during trade negotiations to force us to make concessions. There are recent reports saying that the US has cut off engine supplies due to China's continued refusal to ease restrictions on rare earth exports, aiming to pressure us into lifting the ban.
The same operation was previously carried out by the US when it globally banned Huawei's artificial intelligence chips known as the Ascend series. At that time, the US threatened countries that using this chip would face sanctions.
Now it seems that the economic and trade conflicts between China and the US have fully entered the deep-water zone, with the US attempting to strangle various advanced Chinese technologies in their infancy through this economic and trade conflict.
We often say that Trump's demands were too high in negotiations, but at least he wanted to reach an agreement with China to help alleviate the US debt crisis and reduce the trade deficit.
Now I have to consider whether the "deep state" behind Trump truly wants to reach an agreement with China or is using this opportunity to initiate a new round of technical blockade? I believe this possibility cannot be ruled out.
Good news is that our Huawei chips are performing very well, and progress has been made on domestically produced engines for the C919. At the recently held Ninth Commercial Aviation Engine Technology Conference in 2025, Shi Jianzhong, a director of the Aero Engine Corporation of China, revealed that the trial operation performance of the Changjiang 1000 engine developed for the C919 far exceeded expectations. We have firm confidence in our national scientific researchers, just as Ambassador Xie Feng said: where there is blockade, there will be breakthrough.
