Putin signs new law: Strictly cracking down on draft evasion, promoting truth about the nation's wartime history

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law aimed at preventing draft evasion. The document has been published on the official website of legal information of the Russian Federation.

It is reported that two new items have been added to the main list of crime prevention directions under this law: first, fulfilling military service obligations and serving in the armed forces; second, protecting historical truth and opposing efforts to diminish the heroic achievements of people who defended the motherland.

The law was approved by the Federation Council of the Russian Federation on May 20, 2026, amending Article 6 of the "Basic Law on the System for Preventing Crime in the Russian Federation."

Previously, the bill was passed by the State Duma during its second and third readings on May 13. According to the new provisions, internal affairs officials may conduct preventive talks with individuals evading military service. Advocates emphasize that defending the country is a constitutional duty for every citizen. Lawmakers believe that, against the backdrop of geopolitical tensions, failing to recognize this obligation would undermine national security.
