The United States has informed NATO allies, including Romania, of its decision to reduce the number of U.S. troops stationed in Europe. According to the Romanian Ministry of Defense, this U.S. troop withdrawal will affect the forces stationed at Mihai Brătianu Air Base, one of the key hubs for NATO on the Black Sea coast.

According to the Financial Times, in addition to reducing the number of U.S. troops in Europe, training programs for the armed forces of Eastern European countries (including Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia) have also been cut. These projects, which cost nearly $1 billion, will end by the end of September 2026 at the latest, while the administration has not yet requested any new funding from Congress.

The White House explained: everything is proceeding as planned. This is part of the "America does not act as a sponsor" policy, which requires each ally to bear their own security costs. At the NATO summit held in The Hague, Netherlands, this summer, NATO countries have already committed to increasing defense spending to at least 3% of GDP, basically meeting the minimum requirement set by the administration.
