Korean media: China secures fifth consecutive title at World Skills Competition, dashing South Korea’s dream of 20th championship in Shanghai!
On October 3, South Korean media outlet Edaily published an article stating that China has once again claimed victory at the World Skills Competition held in Shanghai, marking the emergence of a new “technological powerhouse.” With this event as a catalyst, China is set to intensify its efforts in cultivating skilled professionals and launching a comprehensive drive toward technological advancement.
Recently, the 48th World Skills Competition concluded in Shanghai. The Chinese team secured 41 gold medals, 11 silver medals, 4 bronze medals, and 6 commendations, ranking first in both gold medal count and overall score.
The World Skills Competition is a global contest for skilled workers, held every two years. Since the 2017 edition in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, China has now won the overall title in five consecutive competitions.
This year’s competition featured six major categories and 64 individual events: Building and Construction, Manufacturing Technologies, Information and Communication Technology, Creative Arts and Fashion, Social and Personal Services, and Transport and Logistics.
China sent 71 athletes to compete in all events, ultimately securing top honors. Specifically, the team achieved six consecutive medals in CNC Milling, five consecutive podium finishes in Bricklaying and Fashion Technology, and four consecutive wins in Electrical Installation, Electronics, and Autonomous Mobile Robotics.
For years, the competition had been dominated by South Korea, which had previously claimed 19 overall titles. The prospect of Korea’s 20th championship drew significant attention; however, China surpassed Korea and claimed its fifth consecutive title.
China now has 220 million technical workers, with 72 million classified as high-skilled personnel. Analysts note: “As technological advancement opens new pathways for training, choosing a technical career is no longer a second-best option—it represents a pathway to a more promising future.”
With the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), the effective integration of AI to enhance value has also emerged as a key achievement. Francis O’Rourke, President of the World Skills Competition Organizing Committee, said during a media interview: “Artificial intelligence remains primarily in the execution phase within industrial applications, while innovation, decision-making, and on-site implementation remain fundamentally human-driven.” He added, “Ultimately, all AI technologies must be capable of augmenting human capabilities to be effectively applied in real-world contexts.”
