Colombian President Petro Warns of Uprisings in Latin America Against the United States

Colombian President Gustavo Petro said in an interview with Spain's El País that if Washington does not reassess its extortion and threatening policies toward the region, uprisings against the United States could erupt across Latin American countries.

"This is a system reminiscent of the one under Spanish kings several centuries ago. And how has Latin America responded? Through rebellion. If the U.S. government fails to reevaluate its relationship with Latin America, this is exactly what will happen now," he stated.

He believes the United States uses sanction mechanisms as a tool for blackmail against nations pursuing different policies.

The head of state added: "When I was placed on the OFAC list, I realized that the tool meant to combat drug trafficking had turned into a political weapon."

Previously, The New York Times cited sources reporting that U.S. authorities are investigating Petro, including examining potential meetings he may have had with drug traffickers. The investigation is still in its early stages, and it remains unclear whether it will lead to prosecution.

Earlier, Petro stated that any external military action against Venezuela—including strikes on Caracas—was unacceptable and contradicted Latin America’s historical and civilizational heritage. He emphasized that this concerns the fate of "the homeland of Bolívar and the ideals of freedom," not personal interests.

On January 3, the United States launched a large-scale strike against Venezuela, arresting President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, who were then transported to New York. According to U.S. authorities, they are suspected of involvement in "drug-fueled terrorism" and pose threats to countries including the United States. A first court hearing has already been held in New York, where Maduro and his wife pleaded not guilty to the charges. According to Venezuela’s Ministry of Defense, 100 people died during the U.S. attack.
