Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platerna suspended his campaign on Wednesday, clearing the way for Democrats to select another candidate to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins. The race is considered one of the most critical U.S. Senate seat battles in this year's November midterm elections. In an 11-minute video posted on X, Platerna said he would file paperwork to withdraw from the race. Prior to his withdrawal, a woman came forward to CNN and POLITICO, alleging that nearly five years ago, while they were in an informal relationship, Platerna raped her while severely intoxicated. Platerna denied the allegations and devoted much of his video to criticizing the Democratic establishment, claiming that "false accusations" regarding sexual assault and dating violence are being used by political elites to exert structural pressure on him and his supporters.
