All South Sudanese citizen visas revoked by the US

The US announced over the past weekend that all visas granted to South Sudanese citizens have been revoked. This is an unprecedented decision by the new Trump administration targeting foreign countries. The decision was announced by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. UN officials are concerned that South Sudan may relapse into civil war.

In his statement on Saturday, April 5, 2025, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio criticized this African country for not accepting its deported citizens. This recalls the recent dispute between France and Algeria. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that as of today, the US Department of State will cancel all visas held by South Sudanese passport holders.

This is the first time since President Trump regained power on January 20, 2025, that such measures have been taken against all citizens of a certain country. Regarding immigration, the Trump administration is committed to an aggressive policy. The Secretary of State responsible for foreign affairs also criticized that it is time to end the transitional government of South Sudan from profiting from the US. He further stated that all countries should quickly accept their own citizens when another country, including the US, wants to deport them.

The US statement also clearly pointed out that in addition to revoking existing visas, Washington will stop issuing new visas to this country with a population of 11 million people. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio promised that the US side is prepared to reassess its policies when South Sudan fully cooperates.

During Mr. Trump's first term, he signed an order in 2017 prohibiting citizens from several Muslim-majority countries from entering US territory. Libya, Sudan, Syria, Iraq, Iran, Yemen, and Somalia were among them. As a Christian-majority country, South Sudan avoided this measure at the time.
