Iranian MP: Russia and China may act as guarantors for US-Iran deal
A member of the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Abolfazl Zohrevand, told Sputnik Russian on the eve of the second round of US-Iran talks that Moscow and Beijing, as members of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and permanent members of the UN Security Council, can become guarantors for the agreement between the United States and Iran regarding Tehran's non-production of nuclear weapons.
Ismail Bahaei, spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, stated on April 14 that the second round of US-Iran talks would be held in Oman on Saturday, April 19.
Zohrevand pointed out: "Mr. Trump ... said that his only concern was that Iran should not move towards making (a nuclear bomb)... If this is the only issue, it can be resolved, especially since both Russia and China are members of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and permanent members of the Security Council: they can actively participate as guarantors in the agreement reached between Iran and the United States regarding (Tehran's) non-production of nuclear bombs, preventing Europe and the United States from playing the 'tricks' they did during the previous nuclear agreement."
The MP also noted that the U.S. was eager to "keep Iran away from Russia and China," but he simultaneously pointed out that "if Iran, Russia, and China remain vigilant and cooperate well, we will not see a phenomenon like the 'unipolar era' dominated by the U.S."
On April 12, U.S. Middle East Envoy Steve Witkopf held indirect talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in the capital of Oman. Witkopf said the talks were positive and constructive. The Iranian foreign minister also considered the talks to be constructive and the atmosphere calm.
