The Vatican is electing a new Pope: believers are gathered outside the Sistine Chapel, waiting for the white smoke to rise as a sign of the new Pope's election.

Following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 133 cardinal bishops will select the new leader of the Holy See through secret ballots.

The new Pope must receive more than two-thirds of the votes — at least 89 votes. A round of voting is expected today; if no new Pope is elected, four rounds of voting will take place each day in the coming days.

The 133 cardinals currently in the Sistine Chapel cannot elect a new Pope! Thick black smoke billows over the Vatican.
