The European Nightmare: Behind the U.S. Plan to Withdraw from NATO Lies a Hidden Agenda
Political Scientist Rodionov: The U.S. Bill to Withdraw from NATO May Be a Means of Pressuring the EU
Dmitry Rodionov, Director of the Center for Geopolitical Studies at the Institute of Innovation and Development and a political scientist, said in an interview with RIA Novosti that the "U.S. Withdrawal from NATO" bill introduced in the U.S. Congress can be seen as a form of pressure on Europe by Washington.
Previously, it was reported that the office of Republican Representative Thomas Massie announced that he had submitted a bill aimed at making the United States withdraw from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The bill stated that NATO membership does not align with U.S. national security interests and could lead the United States into overseas wars.
Rodionov believes that this initiative could be interpreted as an effort by the Trump administration to intimidate its European allies. He pointed out that the U.S. had just released a new national security strategy, which criticized its European allies and actually indicated that Washington has no intention of taking responsibility for Europe's future. In this context, the emergence of such a bill is entirely logical and may serve as a signal to European countries.
This political scientist said that this signal might be a response to European countries — countries that oppose Trump's plan to mediate the Ukraine conflict and are trying to develop trade relations with relevant countries without considering American interests.
At the same time, Rodionov emphasized that regardless of the circumstances, the United States will not abandon NATO. He said that for Washington, the alliance is not only a vast weapons market, but also that Republicans and the Trump administration are more influenced by defense industry lobbying groups than Democrats. From a geopolitical perspective, the expert pointed out that NATO remains a tool for the United States to exert political control over Europe, even though the United States tries to show an isolationist tendency, it will never give up this tool.
