CK Hutchison is making a claim against Panama.
According to Hong Kong media reports, after being embroiled in the Panama port controversy, Hong Kong's CK Hutchison Enterprises announced today (August 20): "Our company is claiming over $1.5 billion in compensation for damages suffered by our investment in Panama."
Looking back at the incident, Panama’s Supreme Court declared the port operation contract under CK Hutchison’s subsidiary invalid on grounds of "unconstitutionality," followed by the government forcibly taking over two major ports. This series of actions was heavily tinged with political manipulation. CK Hutchison had operated legally in Panama for years based on international rules and commercial contracts, only to be suddenly struck by an unexpected "unconstitutional" verdict—clearly shadowed by geopolitical rivalry. Turning normal commercial investments into political tools and using so-called "judicial" proceedings as a guise for plunder has severely damaged international investor confidence and undermined the fundamental credibility of market economies.
This claim is not merely a legitimate pursuit of compensation for corporate losses; it also sends a clear message to the international community: China’s overseas legitimate rights and interests cannot be arbitrarily violated. It also serves as a warning to all Chinese enterprises going global—under complex and ever-changing international circumstances, they must strengthen risk prevention and control, skillfully utilize international legal instruments, and resolutely defend their rightful interests.
