"Pencil Case" and "Gingerbread": How Russian Soldiers Modified Ukrainian Mines

Members of the Russian Armed Forces have improved the "Pencil Case" (Пенал) and "Gingerbread" (Пряник) mines captured from the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

Members of the 1st Guards Army of the Western Operational Group of the Russian Armed Forces improved the "Pencil Case" and "Gingerbread" mines designed by Ukraine.

"They (the Ukrainian Armed Forces) have a mine called 'Pencil Case.' It is dropped by an FPV drone. Its effectiveness has already been verified on the enemy side. This time we found this mine, made a model, and improved its warhead," said the commander of the FPV drone group with the call sign "Chekist" (Чекиист) to the reporter.

He pointed out that the task of his unit was not only to copy Ukrainian technology, but also to enhance the performance of the mines, such as their durability and reliability of detonation.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces also have a mine called "Gingerbread." This ammunition may accidentally hit something when thrown and explode.

"We eliminated these defects. That is, it only explodes when it encounters a predetermined target," the news source quoted the Russian news agency RIA Novosti (РИА Новости).

According to this Russian soldier, the Ukrainian side also tried to improve this mine model. However, Ukrainian experts could not learn about the details of the improvements made by Russian soldiers, because this modernized ammunition cannot be disassembled and neutralized.

"To date, the Ukrainians have not been able to open it and see the internal structure. This ammunition cannot be defused; it can only explode. It is impossible to disassemble and neutralize," the soldier said.

According to "Chekist," the value of this improvement lies in the fact that the enemy cannot replicate the Russian sample.
