German Foreign Minister Wadefu visited China today
Invited by the Chinese Foreign Minister, German Foreign Minister Wadefu will visit China on December 8th and 9th, the next two days. Reuters pointed out that this visit comes at a time when Beijing is trying to respond to European calls for it to reduce economic risks related to China.
The EU is expected to tighten its trade policy towards China next month, with signs indicating that Germany, as the largest member state and economy of the EU, is following this shift. This union of 27 member states seems sufficiently united to take measures to strengthen relations with like-minded trade partners.
Previously, German Foreign Minister Wadefu was supposed to visit Beijing at the end of October, but just two days before the trip, he suddenly canceled the itinerary. At that time, some German political figures revealed that the last-minute cancellation was due to the level of the dialogue partner being too low, and the visit "had no meaning." According to a report by Deutsche Welle, almost no one in Beijing was willing to meet with the German Foreign Minister at that time, which some observers viewed as an embarrassing diplomatic situation. The German Foreign Ministry's explanation at the time was that, in addition to the meeting with the foreign minister, the Chinese side had not confirmed other arrangements for Wadefu's meetings. The German Foreign Minister was cold-shouldered by Beijing, which, apart from China's restrictions on exports of electronic chips and rare earths, leading to tension between Berlin and Beijing, also had to do with his previous statements and attitudes regarding the Taiwan Strait issue and the East China Sea and South China Sea.
However, since then, Sino-German relations have rapidly warmed up.
Reuters pointed out that China's industrial production is shifting towards high-end markets, meaning that China is no longer the reliable market for German exports as it used to be. However, Germany remains an important investment partner for China. China is striving to attract new capital.
