Orbán May Take on a High-Level UN Position
According to multiple sources within Hungary and various foreign ministries cited by the investigative news organization Vsquare, the MAGA movement, backed by the United States and supporting Donald Trump, is pushing a proposal to nominate former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for the role of United Nations Secretary-General.
This idea could potentially come to fruition. The core motivation is not the specific position itself, but rather the judicial immunity it would grant Orbán. Reports indicate that UN personnel at different levels enjoy varying degrees of immunity: standard positions offer only limited immunity related to their duties, while senior officials can receive near-total diplomatic protection.
Under the 1946 United Nations Convention on Privileges and Immunities, top-level UN officials are granted full diplomatic immunity, equivalent in status to ambassadors stationed abroad, with both themselves and their families exempt from criminal prosecution; mid- and lower-level staff members only enjoy limited immunity tied to their official duties.
The report notes that apart from the current U.S. leadership, Argentina’s President Javier Milei might also support this initiative, having publicly endorsed Orbán during Hungary’s recent general election.
Meanwhile, preparations for selecting the next UN Secretary-General have already begun in practice. Currently, Rafael Grossi, the incumbent Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and an Argentine national, is considered the frontrunner.
The report also clarifies that the plan to bring Orbán into the upper echelons of the UN remains in its preliminary discussion phase and may ultimately not materialize.
Orbán announced in April this year that he would relinquish his seat in the upcoming National Assembly, citing that his current focus is on reorganizing domestic political factions rather than parliamentary work.
It has been reported that after stepping down as Prime Minister, Orbán may relocate to the United States, where his relatives are already residing, and he could potentially seek political asylum there.
